How To Find Your WHY

I am a huge believer in personal development. I started my personal development in late 2014. I was working a job that paid really well but required hundreds of hours of my time a month. It also kept me away from my wife. I was working in the North Dakota oil fields for a pipeline company, and she was back in Los Angeles. She works in entertainment so there were zero job opportunities in that field in North Dakota.
In early November 2014 I was finally able to take some time for us to go on a vacation. I wanted her to get out of LA for a while, and I sure as hell wanted to get out of the cold. We booked a trip to Orlando FL for ten days. Three days at Universal Studios Resort, four days at Walt Disney World Resort, and two days of traveling around Orlando.
Upon arriving back in North Dakota, back into the frigid temperatures, I really started to reconsider my decision of coming to ND for work. Yea the pay was great, and we needed the income, but at what cost.
At the time I was starting to learn how to invest in real estate, and one of the books I was reading the author had suggested people should read one of Tony Robbins books Awaken the Giant Within. As suggested I got the book in audio, and started working my way through it. This lead to a chain reaction for wanting to better myself.
Through my eagerness to redevelop the way I think and act by going to work on myself, there was one main reoccurring message form every motivational speaker, every life coach, every mentor, "you must find your WHY." Every one of these people I studied had slightly different approaches to the challenges of life, and how to deal with them, but it all came down to finding your WHY.
You see your WHY, is what is going to get you through those hard times. Your WHY, is what will keep you moving in the direction of your dreams. Your WHY, is what will get you out of bed every morning. Your "WHY," will force you to make the right decisions that will get you to your goals. In short your "WHY," is everything.
It took me several try's to find my WHY, but I finally found it and learned how to cultivate, and nourish it.
Here are some tips to help you find your WHY.
The first step towards finding your WHY, is to evaluate your current situation. You will have to ask yourself a series of questions, and it helps to be brutally honest, and you must be humble to produce the right answers.
1. Why am I in this current situation?
2. What decisions did I make to end up at this point?
3. What was the desired outcome of these decisions?
Once you have clearly answered these questions, you can then move on to the next step which gets you thinking where you want to take your life.
1. What do I truly want out of life?
2. If I stay on this path will I get there? Yes/No
3. If Yes, how long will it take me to get there? If No, what path do I need to be on in order to get there?
4. How did the people who already made it to where I want be, get there?
If you don't know the answer to the last question you must seek the right knowledge to discover it. Never take advice from people who do not have the desired outcome you want. Most people won't see that outcome for you, so you must see it for yourself, and learn from those who have been there. Once you can answer these questions the next step is reverse engineer the outcome.
1. What do I need to learn in order to achieve my goals?
2. Why I am not at my goal/dream right now?
3. What is stopping me from getting it?
4. What changes do I need to make to myself to achieve this goal/dream?
5. Where do I find mentors to help me along the way?
For you there might be a few more things you will need to uncover to get to where you want to be, but for me this answering all these questions gave me a clear picture of where I wanted to go.
Now that you have a clear picture of your desired destination, you can now begin to develop your WHY!
To develop your WHY, the best thing to do is lock yourself in a quiet room where there are no distraction, grab something to write with, and some paper to write on (not a computer, computers are one of the most distracting things ever created). Start writing down all the things you want out of life, and I mean everything, write it all down. Don't worry about how you will get it, just right it down. Next start writing the reasons why you want all these things. Now that you have done that, start ranking those things from most important to the least important. Then write down why those top five to ten things are so important for you to get. What will those top things mean for you? Finally write down what you are willing to do in order to get the top things you want.
Once you have found your WHY you will now need to take massive action to start living out your dream or achieve your goals. Your WHY is what will propel you through those road blocks or in my case literally carve my why through a jungle, as well as pave a road behind me. Your WHY should motivate you each and every day. If your WHY is no longer motivating you stop, and reevaluate your WHY. I said before it took me several tries to find a WHY strong enough to make me take consistent action. For most people this is the case. It's hard for use to get things right on the first try especially when it's all brand new. I assure you if you stick with it, your circumstances will begin to change, and your life will never be the same!
